Buffon breaks Maldini’s record0
Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon broke his countryman Paolo Maldini’s record on a number of played matches on a club level amongst the Italians.
This summer, Gianluigi Buffon returned to Juventus Turin after a one-year business trip to PSG. The goalkeeper came out in the Old Lady’s starting line-up against SPAL and had a clean sheet. Juventus won the match with a confident score of 2:0 and Buffon spent 903 matches on the club level, breaking Maldini’s record.
Compared to the Milan defender, who spent his whole life at one club, following in the family’s footsteps, Buffon also played for Parma and PSG and was on the forefront everywhere. After the 41-year old goalkeeper became a record breaker, he stated,
“It pleases me. I did not know I was so close to the record. I found out about it only in the second to last match. They told me that I caught up with Maldini. This makes me very happy and very proud that I did it. I am happy that have reached this point as a player of a still high level.
I will always be thankful to my parents and wife, they were supportive of me. But I can also say that there is my merit as well in this.”
Buffon is undoubtedly outstanding figure in the Italian football. By and large, thanks to him, the Italian team managed to win the gold of the 2006 World Cup. He took part in the revival of Juventus in the Italian and world arena, and the lack of victory in the Champions League only states the fact of his greatness, as an exception to the rule that only confirms it.
This season Buffon will most likely be a substitute to Wojciech Szczęsny, who took number one for himself and completely justifies it with performance. Therefore, the return to Juventus this summer shold have taken place, because no one will be able to carry out the legend as his fans at the Allianz Stadium would.
