Spaniards lose to Russians at Luzhniki once again0
Real Madrid in the second round of the Champions League at Luzhniki stopped before the wall of CSKA Moscow. For the second time this year a Spanish team lost to Russians, however, this time with a score of 1:0.
This defeat of Real has a lot in common with Furia Roja fiasco in the World Cup against Russia. On the second minute already Vlasic took advantage of inaccurate backward pass from Toni Kroos and opened the score on the table. However, the important thing is not that Real conceded, but they didn’t score a single goal. Besides, Los Blancos haven’t scored for three matches and this is a repetition of their 2007 anti-record, when Fabio Capello managed the team. Moreover, the Madridians lost two matches and had a draw with Atletico.
Real had trouble with squad. Carvajal played less than a half, instead of whom Odriozola. Ramos was absent in the midfield and Marcelo on the left. This hit Los Blancos’ offense, just like Bale and Modric’s absence from the first minutes. However, if the Croat came out on the pitch for the last thirty minutes, then the Welshman missed the match because of groin injury.
Real shot on Igor Akinfeev’s goal 26 times, whereas hitting the target only thrice. It is understandable that the hosts built the wall at their penalty box, not really hoping for counter-attacks, but similar statistics doesn’t benefit Lopetegui’s team. The Spaniard answered journalists’ question, what Real lacked in the match,
“Luck, in some sense. We had many goal moments, shot from different positions, but the ball didn’t get to the goal. A quick goal helped CSKA, they played at home, therefore they got into a perfect situation. We lacked a goal.”
The manager also claimed that he trusts Benzema and he is not bothered with goalless streak of the team. However, it is unclear for now, how he would try to interrupt the bad streak. In the next match Real will play with Alaves and then Levante. Most likely, the Madridians’ series will be interrupted, but will the manager’s approach to matches against serious opponents change only time will tell.
