Frenkie de Jong will continue Messi’s legacy?
0The Catalan Barcelona signed a contract with the Ajax halfback Frenkie de Jong in the winter transfer window. The 21-year old footballer will join Blaugranas in the summer, but is already ready to become the new Messi.
Barcelona paid 75 million euros to Ajax for the footballer and another 11 million can go to Amsterdam as bonuses. However, the footballer is already saying that he chose the Catalan club knowingly and did not fell for PSG.
In an interview to Hetkontakt, the midfielder claimed,
“PSG is a good option, but Barcelona is a dream. I am happy with signing the five-year contract.
If everything is good, there is a possibility that I will never leave, like Lionel Messi.”
The club President Josep Maria Bartomeu expressed his thoughts in a similar manner. He understands that Messi will finish his career soon and the team needs a new leader; therefore will try to solve the problem by the end of his term, so there wouldn’t be a situation, like at Real Madrid after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
“We invite young talented players, because we must continue this successful era. This is our responsibility.
My presidential term ends in two seasons. I have to leave the club in a great position and tell a new president that this is our legacy.
For the past year, Barcelona strengthened with Arthur, Coutinho, Malcom, Lenglet and other young players. These are the performers, which will become the backbone of the team with the departure of Pique, Busquets and Messi. Therefore, de Jong’s purchase is a similar preventive measure to smooth out the generation change.
During the time of Messi’s presence at the club, Barcelona have won 33 trophies and still do not lose chances on a triumph in tournaments. After a half of the season, the Catalans are leading in the championship, have advanced to Copa del Rey semi-finals, as well as the Champions League play-offs.
