Catalan Barcelona have made another transfer this summer, having signed a Betis player, Junior Firpo.

Blaugranas are trying to take advantage from their fiascos for the past two seasons in the Champions League, when the team was eliminated from the tournament, having an advantage of three goals after the first match. After the transfers of Valencia goalkeeper Neto, Ajax halfback Frenkie de Jong and Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, Barcelona signed Junior Firpo.

The purchase of the defender cost the Catalans 30 million euros divided into several tranches. At first, Blaugranas paid 18 million and the remaining sum will be divided as bonuses. The contract with the 22-year old left defender will last five years and his compensation sum is 200 million euros.

For the past season, Firpo entered the pitch in Betis jersey 29 times, in which he scored three goals and made five assists. Firpo has to become Jordi Alba’s successor, who due to his age not always manages to return to defense.

The apogee of Alba being far from optimal conditions is Barcelona’s second match of the Champions League semi-finals against Liverpool. Back then, the Spaniard simply lost position in defense against Trent Alexander-Arnold. This has already become Alba’s thing, when he runs into attack, covering Coutinho and Dembele’s zone, helping Barcelona score goals and because of that has Lionel Messi’s trust. In defensive action, the Spaniard just like the Brazilian, Marcelo from Real is far from perfect.

Therefore, Barcelona have made a logical step, having signed the 22-year old left lateral, capable of both working in defense and support attacks. As for Alba, Ernesto Valverde should look at Real Madrid’s experience with Marcelo, when the Brazilian by the end of the match played on the left winger and the left midfielder position, benefiting the team, whereas participating in counter-pressing.
